Understanding Your Cycle
Menstrual Phase
The menstrual phase is when you have your period. This phase starts on the first day of your period and lasts until the last day of bleeding. During this time, the uterus sheds its lining from the previous cycle.
Follicular Phase
The follicular phase overlaps with the menstrual phase and starts on the first day of your period. During this phase, follicles in the ovaries mature, preparing for ovulation. One follicle will become dominant and release an egg.
Ovulation
Ovulation is when a mature egg is released from the ovary. This typically happens around day 14 of a 28-day cycle. The egg travels down the fallopian tube, where it can be fertilized by sperm. This is your most fertile time.
Luteal Phase
The luteal phase begins after ovulation and lasts until your next period. During this phase, the body produces progesterone to prepare the uterus for a potential pregnancy. If pregnancy doesn't occur, progesterone levels drop, and the cycle begins again.
